Types of visa
There are more than 100 types of visa for which people wishing to go to Australia can apply.
Part of our skill is helping you to decide which type is right for you and which would bring you the greatest chance of a successful application.
Our experience gives us a good understanding of how personal issues may affect your application if, for example, you have relatives living in Australia, are newly married, or a divorced or separated parent.

The most common types of visa include:
- Skilled
- Provisional and permanent visas which are designed to attract people of working age whose skills are recognised and valuable to Australia.
- Business
- The majority of business migrants will enter Australia on a provisional (temporary) visa for 4 years, and after a specified level of business or investment activity, may apply for permanent residency.
- Employment
- These visas enable Australian employers to recruit highly skilled workers from other countries or allow overseas businesses to transfer ‘key’ people to Australia.
- Student
- Temporary visas are available for overseas students wanting to study in Australia.
- Graduate student residence
- Eligible students are able to apply for residency on completion of their study and while still in Australia.
- Partner
- Spouses (including de facto), fiancés and interdependent partners of Australian citizens or permanent residents may apply for the grant of a provisional or permanent resident visa.
- Parent
- Parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents who meet certain criteria may apply for a provisional or permanent resident visa.
- Family
- A dependent child, adopted child, orphan relative, last remaining close family relative, aged dependent relative or carer may apply for a permanent resident visa.
- Former resident
- People with distinguished talent, or close ties with Australia, may be eligible for a provisional or permanent resident visa.
- Retirement / investor
- Over 55s with sufficient income and capital may apply for a retirement visa which permits an extended temporary stay in Australia.
- Resident return
- Permits Australian permanent residents to travel to and from Australia as often as they wish, while maintaining their status as permanent residents.
